Contract talks stall with another Tottenham star

Tottenham have hit a stumbling block in contract talks with star creator Christian Eriksen, reports The Daily Mail.

Tottenham have made securing the long-term future of their best players a priority over new signings in the last two years but are struggling to convince some key men in the squad.

Mauricio Pochettino's side failed to sign a single player in the pre-season but the summer was still deemed a success as they didn't lose anyone.

Toby Alderweireld is already set to leave the club in the next two transfer windows after failing to agree a new deal and now wage demands are slowing talks with Eriksen.

The Denmark international has two years remaining on his existing deal and Tottenham are desperate to resolve his future before the end of the current campaign.

Eriksen would only have 12 months remaining on his contract next summer and that would almost certainly encourage other clubs to test Tottenham’s resolve.

The 26-year-old has developed into one of the best playmakers in the Premier League since joining Tottenham for £11m in 2013 and Real Madrid and Barcelona have even been credited with an interest in the last 12 months.

Tottenham agreed a new £300,000-a-week deal for star man Harry Kane before the 2018 World Cup, shattering their wage structure, and Eriksen wants to be rewarded with a similar contract in order to pledge his future to the club.

The north London outfit have already refused to buckle to Alderweireld’s demands but it would be an even bigger blow to lose a player of Eriksen’s importance.

In the last three Premier League campaigns, only Kevin De Bruyne (34) has provided more assists than Eriksen (25) in the Premier League.
