Arsenal are on course to break their club transfer record to sign Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette, reports The Guardian.
Arsene Wenger has identified Lacazette as a top transfer target this summer in a bid to transform his offensive options and the Gunners have now tabled a £44m bid for his services.
Lacazette has spent his whole career at Lyon but announced his intention to leave his boyhood club at the end of last season with two years remaining on his existing deal.
The France international was due to join Atletico Madrid this summer but a deal collapsed when Diego Simeone’s side were unsuccessful in overturning their FIFA-imposed transfer ban.
Lacazette was reluctant to talk to Arsenal after they blew their chance to sign him last summer but Arsenal have made a breakthrough and are now on course to eclipse the £42.5m they paid Real Madrid for Mesut Ozil in 2013.
In the last two Ligue 1 seasons only Edinson Cavani (54) has scored more goals than Lacazette (49).
