Robin van Persie’s Manchester United career came to an end because he lacked the spirit Louis van Gaal was harvesting in the squad, according to The Guardian.
The Netherlands striker was widely expected to become United’s next captain when Van Gaal was made manager, but he was instead overlooked in favour of Wayne Rooney.
Van Persie, 32, only scored 10 league goals for United last season – his lowest return in seven years (9) – before being sold to Fenerbahce over the summer.
However, it is now believed that the former Arsenal striker was moved out the club because he was deemed a bad influence on other players in the squad.
Van Persie hasn’t settled as many had expected since making the move to Istanbul over the summer, but he is still only requiring 116.8 mins per goal or assist in the Turkish Super Lig this season, which none of his teammates can claim to better.
