Manchester United eye move for Borussia Dortmund midfielder

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl has emerged as a transfer target for Manchester United, reports The Daily Mail.

Jose Mourinho is determined to land a new holding midfielder this summer but United’s search has been a frustrating one.

Tottenham will charge their Premier League rivals a premium if they want to prize Eric Dier away from the club, while Chelsea will not let Nemanja Matic leave Stamford Bridge before they complete a deal for Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko.

The Premier League giants are now weighing up alternatives and Weigl has emerged as a target, although no deal is expected to take place this summer due to the fact he is sidelined until mid-September.

Weigl broke his ankle during Dortmund’s 1-1 draw with Augsburg in April and will miss all of pre-season as he looks to recover in time for the second month of the upcoming campaign.

United have previous with Dortmund after signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan from the Bundesliga giants for £35m last summer and Mourinho’s could eye up a second raid in the future.

Of players aged 21 and under in Europe’s top five leagues last season, only Niklas Sule (2341) and Lucas Torreira (2116) attempted more passes than Weigl (2027).
