Manchester United midfielder set for new deal

Nemanja Matic is set to sign a new contract and extend his Manchester United stay beyond the end of the season, reports Manchester Evening News.

The Serb was heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford in January, with a switch to Italy or a transfer to Tottenham, where he would have been reunited with Jose Mourinho, mooted.

However, Matic has recently re-established himself in the United XI under head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following injury to Scott McTominay and is set to be rewarded with a new contract.

Matic's current deal runs until the summer and he has been free to negotiate a pre-contract with another European side.

United have the option to trigger a one-year contract extension, which was included when Matic moved to the club in 2017, but Solskjaer is eager to iron out fresh terms for the former Celsea man.

The 31-year-old is set to start in a midfield three alongside Fred and Scott McTominay in today's Manchester Derby.

United have a better win rate with Matic starting (50%) than when he doesn't (33.3%) in the Premier League this season.
