Everton favourites to sign England international

Everton have re-emerged as the new favourites to sign Burnley defender Michael Keane after Manchester United signed Victor Lindelof from Benfica, reports BBC Sport.

Keane was widely expected to return to United just two years after Louis van Gaal sanctioned his sale to the Clarets but Jose Mourinho instead opted to spend £30m to sign Lindelof.

The 24-year-old has turned down new contract offers from Burnley and is destined to leave Turf Moor this summer after enjoying a thoroughly impressive campaign for Sean Dyche’s side last season.

Everton have been interested in signing the England international all summer and are now the favourites for his signature after accepting Keane was on his way back to United prior to the Lindelof deal.

The Toffees have already spent nearly £50m to sign Jordan Pickford and Davy Klaassen this summer and Keane’s arrival would set them back another £25m, but it would be a shrewd signing with Phil Jagielka set to leave.

Only Bournemouth defender Steve Cook (226) made more headed clearances in the Premier League last season than Keane (176).
