Roma sign Manchester City defender

Roma have announced they have signed Manchester City defender Aleksandar Kolarov for €5m (£4.5m).

Pep Guardiola lavished praise on the versatile Serbia international last season but he gradually dropped down the pecking order towards the end of last season and has now completed a controversial move to Roma.

Kolarov spent three years at Lazio before joining City in 2010 and now the 31-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year deal with their fiercest rivals.

“I am extremely happy to be here,” Kolarov told the club’s official website. “I will give 100 per cent and more to Roma. My objective is always the same: to win.”

Kolarov spent the majority of his City career as a first-team regular but would have had limited opportunities next season following the impending arrival of Benjamin Mendy from Monaco.

In the last four Premier League campaigns only Patrick van Aanholt (45) has missed the target with more shots from outside the box than Kolarov of all defenders (29).
