Manchester United make breakthrough in contract talks with star man

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has indicated he is finally ready to put pen to paper on a new five-year deal, claims The Daily Mirror.

De Gea’s current £200,000-a-week deal has entered the final 12 months and the Spain international has stalled on signing a new contract after a difficult 12 months for club and country.

Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid have both been linked with a move for the United shot-stopper in the last few months but both appear to have cooled their interest.

De Gea was originally holding out for the same £500,000-a-week salary as top-earner Alexis Sanchez but United have made a breakthrough in talks with his agent, Jorge Mendes, for a £350,000-a-week deal.

With Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku both heavily linked with summer moves away, news that De Gea is ready to pledge his long-term future to the club is a huge boost for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

United finished last season with their worst ever defensive record in a Premier League campaign (54 goals conceded) and De Gea managed just seven clean sheets in the competition, 14 shy of Gold Glove winner Alisson.
