Arsenal could sack Arsene Wenger this summer

Arsenal will re-assess Arsene Wenger’s position at the club at the end of the season, reports The Daily Mail.

The Gunners are set to finish outside of the top-four in the Premier League for the second season in a row and were heavily criticised in the wake of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City.

Arsenal fans have been calling for Wenger to leave for many years now and the board will consider his position at the end of the season after 22 years at the club.

Monaco head coach Leonardo Jardim, Germany manager Joachim Low and Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers have already emerged as potential replacements for Wenger, while Manchester City assistant Mikel Arteta is also being linked with an Arsenal return.

The manner of Arsenal’s defeat in the Carabao Cup final has only heaped more pressure on Wenger and it seems more clear-cut than ever before that this could genuinely be the Frenchman’s last season at the club.

Wenger’s only saving grace is the Europa League but even then they have been handed a tough draw against AC Milan in the next round. With RB Leipzig, Atletico Madrid and Borussia Dortmund also still in the competition, another season without silverware beckons for the Gunners.

Arsenal are an astonishing 27 points behind league leaders City and that gap could increase by a further three points if they lose at home to Pep Guardiola’s side on Thursday night.

In fact, Wenger’s side are five points worse off after 27 league games this season than they were last term and have also scored fewer goals and conceded more.

Furthermore, Arsenal have committed the most errors that have directly led to an opposition goal in the Premier League this season (11).
