Manchester United close in on Serbian sensation

Manchester United are set to confirm Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as their first summer signing after an £80m fee was agreed for the youngster, reports the Sun on Sunday.

The Serbian has been courted by United for some time now, though the Premier League outfit initially baulked at Lazio’s demands for Milinkovic-Savic.

However, a stunning season that has seen the 23-year-old score 11 goals and register a further three assists has seen United bow to the demands of the high-flying Rome side.

United are keen on a new central midfielder, with Michael Carrick retiring at the end of the season and Marouane Fellaini set to leave Old Trafford in the summer.

Jorginho had been a top target for United, but it looks as though they have missed out on the Italian’s signature with rivals Manchester United now leading the way for the Napoli man.

United are looking to wrap up a deal for Milinkovic-Savic before the World Cup, as a good performance in Russia would see his value soar higher than it already is.

The Lazio man has scored more goals from outside of the box (5) than any other player aged 23 and under in Europe’s top five leagues this season, reinforcing a statistically calculated WhoScored strength of ‘long shots’.
