Arsenal plot January move for Bundesliga defender

Arsenal are ready to rekindle their interest in RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano in January, claims The Sun.

The Gunners were heavily linked with a move for Upamecano in the summer, as Unai Emery looked to bolster his defensive options.

It is alledged Arsenal had a £40m bid rebuffed by Leipzig but the north London outfit haven't given up hope of signing the 20-year-old.

Upamecano's current Leipzig deal is due to expire at the end of the current campaign and he is yet to pen fresh terms.

Leipzig now risk losing the France Under-21 international for nothing at the end of the season.

Arsenal are hopeful of pulling off a cut-price deal when the January transfer window opens, though are unlikely to be unchallenged in their pursuit.

The Frenchman has started two of Leipzig's first three Champions League matches but has only made four appearances in the Bundesliga this term.

Part of the season Upamecano may not be a first-team regular is perhaps due to the fact the German side fare better when he doesn't play.

In fact, Leipzig have a far better record in the Bundesliga since the beginning of last season when Upamecano has not started (66.7% win ratio) compared to when he has featured from the off (38.9%).
