Newcastle handed boost in pursuit of top scoring striker

Reports in the Netherlands from De Telegraaf (via Sport Witness) claim that a move to Newcastle could yet be on the cards for Feyenoord hitman Nicolai Jorgensen.

The paper had previously reported that the Dutch champions were unwilling to negotiate a deal for the Danish international but while the Magpies are known to have had a bid rejected, they are seemingly moving closer to Feyenoord’s valuation.

Newcastle’s first offer was believed to be just under €15m but the Dutch daily suggested that was some €10m below Jorgensen’s valuation.

However, in today’s edition they state (translated by Sport Witness) “In the negotiations Newcastle United have risen to over €17m. With this, the British are slowly moving towards the redemption sum of over €20m required by Feyenoord.”

The ball now seems to be in the Premier League outfit’s court, though they appear unlikely to end their interest and could yet meet the fee required before deadline day next week.

The 27-year-old has had his injury problems this season but is now back fit and firing once more, having scored the goals that helped secure Feyenoord the title last season, notching 21 times and registering an equally impressive 11 assists.

His ability to use his frame to hold up and bring others into play would be a godsend for Benitez, whose strikers have struggled to connect with the midfield for much of the campaign.

At present summer signing Joselu is the club’s top scorer in the league with just four goals.
