Buffon secures emotional Juventus return

Juventus have confirmed iconic goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has returned to the club on a one-year deal.

Buffon only left Juventus to join Paris Saint-Germain 12 months ago but the French side agreed to terminate his contract this summer.

The former Italy international was linked with a move to Porto but has instead opted to return to Juventus.

Buffon has accepted a role as back-up to first choice goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny but reportedly has his eye on surpassing Paolo Maldini’s record for appearances in Serie A.

The 41-year-old is currently seven Serie A appearances behind Maldini’s record of 647 and there have even been suggestions Buffon wanted a clause included in his Juventus contract to guarantee eight league matches next season.

Buffon only made 17 league appearances for PSG last season and kept just six clean sheets.

However, only Walter Benitez (79.5%) had a better save success rate than Buffon (77.3%) and the veteran shot-stopper posted the best pass success rate of goalkeepers (5+ appearances) in Europe’s top five leagues (90%).
