Arsenal transfer news: Gunners closing in on signing of €32m Euro 2024 winner

Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Real Sociedad and Spain midfielder Mikel Merino, reports Fabrizio Romano.

Merino was key in Spain's success in Germany over the summer, scoring the crucial winner in their 2-1 quarter-final victory over the tournament hosts.

And his form for both club and country didn't go unnoticed with Arsenal set to sign Merino ahead of next week's deadline.

Merino was key for Real Sociedad last season but the Spanish side have reluctantly agreed to cash in on the 28-year-old.

Both Real Sociedad and Arsenal have come to an agreement over a €32m fee, which could raise to €37m, with the midfielder set to sign a four-year contract.

Central midfield has been an area that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta sought to strengthen, with Merino quickly emerging as the club's number one target.

Arsenal have already signed David Raya and Riccardo Calafiori from Brentford and Bologna, respectively, this summer.

The Gunners may also make a late move for another attacker ahead of next week's deadline, with Ademola Lookman linked with a summer switch to the Emirates.
