Manchester United want RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has set his sights on RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano, claims ESPN.

United are currently in the process of wrapping up a £40m deal for Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek and then intend to pursue Upamecano.

The Leipzig starlet only signed a new contract extension at the start of the summer but United are optimistic a deal can be struck.

Upamecano reportedly has a €45m (£40.1m) release clause in his new contract that will become active at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

However, Solskjaer wants to bring in the 21-year-old this summer even if it means paying slightly higher than his release clause to get a deal over the line.

The 21-year-old has been called up to the senior France squad for the first time ahead of this week's UEFA Nations League matches following his blistering form in the knockout stage of the Champions League.

Of players who attempted at least 20 tackles in UEFA's elite club competition in 2019/20, Upamecano had the best tackle success rate (92.6%).
