Lyon furiously deny Liverpool agreement for Fekir

French side Lyon have blasted suggestions they are on the brink of selling captain Nabil Fekir to Liverpool.

Reports emerged on Thursday evening claiming Liverpool were on the verge of wrapping up a €60m deal to sign Fekir.

The France international has emerged as a top transfer target for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp’s side hope to conclude a deal before the World Cup starts next week.

Liverpool were even confident of announcing a deal in the next 48 hours, but Lyon have lambasted those claims.

“The information on the transfer of Nabil Fekir is false,” a statement read on Lyon’s official Twitter account.

“Lyon categorically denies the information presented by many media outlets about the transfer of Nabil Fekir to Liverpool.”

It remains to be seen where this leaves Liverpool in their pursuit of 24-year-old, having encountered a similar predicament with Virgil Van Dijk 12 months ago.

Liverpool were forced to pull out of a deal for Van Dijk then, only to sign the Dutch centre-back from Southampton six months later.

Fekir played a direct hand in 26 goals in 30 league appearances for Lyon last season, while only Marseille’s Florian Thauvin (13) won the WhoScored Man of the Match award more times than the Lyon skipper (12).
