Napoli star signs new long-term deal

Napoli have announced Lorenzo Insigne has put pen to paper on a new long-term deal keeping him at the club until 2022.

Insigne has previously been linked with a move to Arsenal and Liverpool but Napoli have moved to secure the future of one of their best players after what has been a sensational campaign for the forward.

“I am very happy that Lorenzo is a symbol of Napoli, because it takes time to build things that will then last over time,” ESPN quotes Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis as saying at the press conference. “I will never tire of telling you that we opened up a well in the desert. I was given a piece of paper and told to get started with a club.”

The 25-year-old has developed into a key player for Napoli since breaking into the first team in 2009 and is part of a fearsome front free of Jose Callejon and Dries Mertens in Serie A this season.

Insigne has scored 14 goals and registered seven assists in Serie A this season, averaging the highest league rating he has ever managed in his career to date (7.52). In fact, only Mertens (7.58) has garnered a higher rating for Napoli in the league this season.
