Barcelona target key Manchester City star to shore up defence

Barcelona have made Manchester City centre-back Aymeric Laporte their number one defensive target this summer, reports Mundo Deportivo. 

The French international has been a vital member of the City defence following his arrival from Athletic Club and his absence has only served to magnify his importance for the defending champions. 

Head coach Pep Guardiola is keen to retain his services such is the impact Laporte has on his side's defence, yet with a possible Champions League ban, the 25-year-old may seriously consider leaving the Etihad Stadium for a return to Spain. 

Barcelona are pondering their options in the summer with the heart of the defence expected to a primary port of call to strengthen. 

Gerard Pique is now the wrong side of 30, while Samuel Umtiti has been heavily linked with a move away from Camp Nou with recent seasons. 

The sale of Jean-Clair Todibo leaves Barcelona short of centre-back options and as the Blaugrana eye up a possible new addition, Laporte is believed to be at the top of the club's wish list. 

Injuries have seen Laporte make just seven Premier League starts this season, but he remains City's star defender and they would be reluctant to allow him to leave without at least a suitable replacement lined up.
