Atletico star a doubt for Bayern fixture

Atletico Madrid are sweating on the fitness of Diego Godin ahead of their Champions League semi-final encounter with Bayern Munich.

Godin, 30, lasted just 11 minutes of Atletico’s 1-0 win over Athletic Club on Wednesday evening before limping off with a thigh injury.

The Uruguay international is regarded as one of the best centre backs in the world and his absence would be a huge blow to Diego Simeone’s plans for Bayern.

However, as their quarter-final against Barcelona proved, they can cope without one of their most important defenders. 20-year-old Lucas Hernandez filled in for Gimenez in both legs alongside Godin and they only conceded one goal against arguably the best front three ever assembled over the two legs.

Since August 2013 Atletico have won a staggering 70.4% of their league matches with Godin in the starting XI, compared to just 58.4% from their 12 matches without him in that time.
