Burnley have announced Stephen Ward has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal keeping him at the club until 2019, with the option to a further 12 months.
Ward, who scored a stunning goal in Burnley’s shock 3-2 win over Chelsea on Saturday, has spent the last three years at Burnley after joining from Wolves in 2014.
The 31-year-old had entered the final 12 months of his existing Burnley deal but the Clarets have moved to secure the future of one of their most reliable defenders.
“It’s great and long may it continue,” Ward told the club’s official website in reaction to extending his stay at the Turf Moor. “I’m delighted to have signed. It’s just great to be part of a club like this at the minute and hopefully we can have another successful season.”
The Republic of Ireland international has been a mainstay in the Burnley team since they got promotion back to the Premier League last season, featuring in 38 of a possible 39 league games since August 2016.
In that time, only Ben Mee has completed as many interceptions as Ward of all Burnley players in the Premier League (both 74).
