Liverpool emerge as shock suitors for West Ham target

Liverpool have earmarked Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez as a top summer transfer target, claims The Sun.

Gomez was heavily linked with a January move to West Ham but the Hammers refused to match his £43m release clause.

West Ham are expected to rekindle their interest in the Uruguay international at the end of the season but could now face stiff competition from Liverpool.

Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi face uncertain futures at Liverpool, as Jurgen Klopp is keen to bolster his offensive options in the summer. 

Celta Vigo are only two points above the relegation zone and will be forced to cash in on Gomez if they fail to beat the drop.

Liverpool are keen on the 22-year-old and believe a £35m fee could be good enough to prise the striker away from their Spanish counterparts.

Despite Celta’s woes this season, Gomez has still managed a direct hand in 14 goals in 23 league appearances (nine goals, five assists).

The Celta No.9 has scored or assisted 35 goals in 59 league appearances since the start of last season and in that time only one player has netted more headed goals than Gomez (12).
