Flamengo sign former Atletico Madrid left-back Filipe Luis

Brazilian outfit Flamengo have confirmed they have signed former Atletico Madrid let-back Filipe Luis on a free transfer.

Luis has been a free agent since the start of the month after his contract with Atletico expired.

The Brazil international was linked with a move to Barcelona and there were even suggestions he could re-sign with Atletico.

However, it has now emerged the 33-year-old has returned to Brazil to play club football for the first time in 15 years.

Luis, who played an integral part in Brazil’s Copa America triumph on home soil this summer, has signed a contract with Flamengo running until December 2021.

Flamengo are currently third in this season’s Brasileirao and five points of joint-leaders Santos and Palmeiras.

Luis has been a first-team regular for Atletico during both stints at the club but struggled to stay fit for prolonged periods during the last two seasons.

The Brazilian left-back managed just 24 league starts last term and only 19 in 2017/18.

Despite missing chunks of both seasons, only three players have made more tackles than Luis (267) in LaLiga since August 2017.
