Manchester United’s first choice De Gea replacement is not Oblak
Manchester United will move for Ajax goalkeeper Andre Onana and not Jan Oblak if David de Gea leaves the club this summer, claims The Independent.
De Gea has entered the final 12 months of his current United deal and has rejected the club’s best offer of a new long-term contract.
Paris Saint-Germain are set to test United’s resolve with a £60m bid this summer after confirming Gianluigi Buffon’s departure last week.
De Gea has even been usurped in the pecking order for the Spanish national team after a poor 12 months and looks likely to leave United this summer.
United have previously been linked with a move for Atletico Madrid star Jan Oblak and the 25-year-old is reportedly keen on a move to Old Trafford.
While the Red Devils are huge admirers of the Atletico goalkeeper, it’s unlikely they will pay his €120m release clause.
United are instead lining up a summer move for Ajax shot-stopper Onana, who will be significantly cheaper than Oblak.
The 23-year-old played an integral part in Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals and is valued at around £40m.
Onana, who will represent Cameroon at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, kept 15 clean sheets in 33 league appearances last term, only one fewer than stat leader Jeroen Zoet.
Furthermore, of goalkeepers that made at least five appearances in Eredivisie last term, only Zoet (72.9%) had a better save success rate than Onana (72.7%).
