Chelsea defender set for improved contract

Chelsea are set to offer Antonio Rudiger with improved terms as a reward for his fine start to the season, claims The Daily Mail.

Maurizio Sarri’s side announced a new five-year deal for left-back Marcos Alonso on Wednesday and want Rudiger to follow suit.

The Germany international only joined Chelsea 12 months ago and still has more than three years left to run on his current deal.

However, Rudiger has leapfrogged Gary Cahill and Andreas Christensen in the pecking order under Sarri and is a first-team regular this season.

Rudiger has formed such an impressive partnership with David Luiz that both Christensen and Cahill are now considering January exits.

Rudiger has only missed 21 minutes of league action this season and Chelsea are planning contract talks with his representatives.

The 25-year-old scored his first goal of the season in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United last weekend.

Furthermore, only Mateo Kovacic (94.6%) has a better pass success rate than Rudiger (91.7%) of all Chelsea players in the league this season (1+ start).
