Veteran striker set for England recall

New England manager Sam Allardyce is ready to hand Jermain Defoe a recall to the national team after a three-year absence, reports The Daily Mirror.

Defoe, who will be 34 in October, hasn’t featured for England since November 2013 (vs Chile) but played a leading role in Sunderland’s escape from relegation last season under Allardyce.

The 61-year-old was named Roy Hodgson’s successor on Friday after being awarded an initial two-year deal to become the Three Lions’ manager.

Only Harry Kane (25) and Jamie Vardy (24) scored more goals of English strikers in the Premier League last season than Defoe (15), who scored 11 of those away from home.
