Newcastle secured a 2-0 win at Leeds on Sunday to extend their winning run to eight games, the second longest current streak in Europe’s leagues this season.
A generous Rob Green error gift wrapped Dwight Gayle with the Magpies’ first of the afternoon to take his total for the season to 12.
Gayle scored his and Newcastle’s second after the interval having tapped in Vernon Anita’s low cross following a good team move involving Jack Colback and Ayoze Perez.
Rafa Benitez’s side now sit five points clear at the top of the Championship table and nine ahead of third-placed Reading as Newcastle continue their fine form as they look to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
While Gayle, who has now scored more goals (13) than any other Championship player this season, will rightly gain the plaudits, goalkeeper Karl Darlow earned the WhoScored man of the match award with a rating of 8.48 having made four saves and two cross claims to ensure a clean sheet and all three points for the table toppers.
Newcastle began the season as title favourites and victory on Sunday at Leeds’ expense only reinforced their credentials.
