Arsenal midfielder could be heading for shock exit

Aaron Ramsey could be one of a number of British players on the verge of being culled by Arsene Wenger at Arsenal, according to The Daily Mail.

In December 2012, Arsenal confirmed Carl Jenkinson, Jack Wilshere, Kieran Gibbs, Ramsey and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had penned new deals, breeding a wave of optimism around north London that Wenger was planning to build his team around a British contingent.

However, Wenger is gradually starting to abandon that idea and could even be prepared to sell some of those names as Arsenal brace themselves for offers from their Premier League rivals.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been heavily linked with a summer move away from the Emirates and as his career has stagnated, it would make sense for the England international to kick start his career elsewhere.

However, it is the news that Wenger is open to the idea of selling Ramsey that may come as a shock to some fans. Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for Gladbach midfielder Granit Xhaka and Ramsey’s position in the team is far from certain beyond the end of the current season.

Injuries have thwarted Ramsey’s career since he arrived from Cardiff in 2011, but he has been one of Arsenal’s best players in the last few years and has even adapted well to an unfamiliar wide-right position at times to accommodate other players in the team.

Since August 2013, only Olivier Giroud (57) and Mesut Ozil (47) have played a direct hand in more league goals than Ramsey (38) for Arsenal.
