Gabriel Jesus inspires Palmeiras to historic Brasileirao title

Palmeiras’ 22-year wait for their fifth Brazilian league title is finally over after they secured the Championship with a 1-0 win over Chapecoense AF on Sunday night.

The three points secured at the weekend ensures Cuca’s side now have an unassailable seven-point lead over Flamengo with one game of the season remaining.

It was a particularly fitting end for 19-year-old Jesus, who will move to  Manchester City in January after joining Pep Guardiola’s team for £27m in the summer.

Jesus has been touted as the next best star to emerge from Brazil since Neymar and was highly sought after during the summer, but it was ultimately City who won the race for his signature.

The Brazil international, who helped his country to gold at the 2016 Olympics, was in tears after their win at the weekend after helping his boyhood club to their first title since 1994.

Jesus has the chance to finish the season as the highest rated active player in the league, with Vitoria forward Marinho (7.45) marginally above him in the ratings (7.42). In 27 appearances Jesus has played a direct hand in 17 goals (12 goals, five assists).
