Nemanja Matic wants to leave Chelsea and reunite with Jose Mourinho at Manchester United this summer, reports Manchester Evening News.
The Chelsea midfielder is a top transfer target for Mourinho this summer after failing to bring the Serbia international with him to Old Trafford last summer.
Matic rediscovered his best form for Chelsea this season but Antonio Conte is keen on strengthening his midfield options by making Monaco ace Tiemoue Bakayoko one of his first summer signings.
Bakayoko’s arrival would seriously threaten Matic’s first-team opportunities next season and United are growingly increasingly confident that a deal can be made with Chelsea 12 months after Conte refused to sell the 28-year-old.
After selling Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger over the course of the season, Mourinho has made bolstering his midfield as one of the club’s top priorities this summer and believes they have more chance to sign Matic than Tottenham’s Eric Dier.
As well as shielding the Chelsea defence alongside PFA Player of the Year N’Golo Kante, Matic has also proven a useful player in and around the opposition penalty box this season. In fact, only Cesc Fabregas (12) and Pedro (9) registered more assists in the Premier League for Chelsea this season than Matic (7).
