‘Ramos 100% staying’- Benitez

Manchester United have been served what could prove a fatal blow in their pursuit of Sergio Ramos after Real Madrid’s manager Rafa Benitez insisted his captain is ‘100%’ staying this summer.

Louis van Gaal’s side have been extensively linked with the 29-year-old, who could be included in a part-exchange that would see David de Gea return to the Spanish capital.

“I have a lot of respect for [United manager] Louis van Gaal, but Sergio will be staying with us,” the former Liverpool manager told reporters on Madrid’s pre-season tour of Australasia

“He is our player, our captain. I would like to see him [at the club] at the beginning of the season, because he’s a key player for us.

“For me, 100% [he is staying]. I insist that it is clear for me and the club, Sergio will be here. Football is a curious world, but Ramos will be staying.”

The Spain international has been regarded as one of the best defenders in world football for the last six years and Van Gaal hinted earlier this week that the Madrid captain was in his transfer plans.

Only Chelsea skipper John Terry has scored as many goals as Ramos (22) in the top five European leagues over the last six seasons.
