Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has laughed off claims the Scottish champions are poised to land Manchester United outcast Bastian Schweinsteiger.
Schweinsteiger, 32, has been forced to train with the reserves by manager Jose Mourinho after being deemed surplus to requirements just 12 months after joining the club from Bayern Munich.
Reports emerged of the weekend suggesting Celtic could move for the former Germany international but Rodgers has batted those away after citing Schweinsteiger’s physicality as the main reason they won’t be signing him.
“I can get you a marquee signing but they’ve got to be able to press and they’ve got to be able to run,” Rodgers told the Glasgow Evening Times, when asked about interest in Schweinsteiger, via The Independent.
“It doesn’t have to be a marquee signing. I think we have brought in some really top talents who have come in and excited the supporters.
“For me it’s never been about the name. But of course it the name is big and he can play, then great, but for me it’s about having the right profile of player who can come in.”
United’s win ratio with Schweinsteiger in the starting XI is only 38.5% from the start of last season in the Premier League, while United have won a staggering 59.3% without him.
