Tottenham shatter club transfer record for midfield dynamo

Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele has joined Tottenham in a club-record deal worth a reported £64.5m, the Premier League outfit has announced

Tottenham have agreed to pay Lyon an initial €62m (£55.4m), with a further €10m (£9m) owed in performance related add-ons.

Ndombele has put pen to paper on a six-year deal running until the summer of 2025 and has become one of Tottenham's best-paid players.

Tottenham went 18 months without signing a new player and have announced two in the space of a day, with Ndombele's arrival following Jack Clarke's transfer from Leeds on Tuesday morning.

Ndombele's arrival, however, is seen as huge statement of intent from Tottenham and is exactly the type of transfer manager Mauricio Pochettino has been demanding.

Tottenham were unable to call on Eric Dier or Victor Wanyama on a regular basis last season and failed to replace Mousa Dembele at the start of the year.

With Christian Eriksen expected to leave Tottenham this summer, it is imperative Pochettino bolsters his squad and they are also interested in Real Betis midfielder Giovani Lo Celso.

By signing Ndombele, Tottenham have eclipsed the £42m they paid Ajax for Davinson Sanchez in 2017 and may need to break their transfer record for a second time this summer if they want to land Lo Celso.

Of players who have attempted at least 100 dribbles in Ligue 1 since August 2017, Ndombele has the best success rate (75.1%).
