French side announce capture of former Crystal Palace midfielder

Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne have confirmed the signing of Yohan Cabaye on a free transfer.

The former Newcastle, PSG and Crystal Palace midfielder had been without a club since January, when he terminated his deal with Al-Nasr Dubai.

The 33-year-old has put pen to paper on a one-year deal with Saint-Etienne, though he was not signed in time for their Wednesday evening clash with Lille.

Les Verts are seeking to maintain their unbeaten start to the season having defeated Dijon on the opening weekend of the campaign before they were held to a 1-1 draw with Brest.

It remains to be seen how big a role Cabaye will play for Saint-Etienne as they look to secure another European finish.

The experienced France international hasn’t played in a top European league since his move away from Crystal Palace in 2018, during which he made 31 Premier League appearances.

On his move to Saint-Etienne, Cabaye said: “It is with great joy and pride that I sign for St Étienne. I aspire to rediscover all my form as quickly as possible.

“In the image of the club, I have the ambition of having a very good season. With Mathieu Debuchy, I am joining up with a friend. His presence played a role in my decision.”
