Alberto Moreno has revealed he never considered leaving Liverpool over the summer despite the arrival of Scotland international Andrew Robertson.
The 25-year-old was widely expected to be shown the Anfield exit over the summer after dropping down the pecking order under Jurgen Klopp.
Moreno’s stock was so low that James Milner was even preferred at left-back last season, while the arrival of Robertson over the summer only seemed to emphasise he had no future at the club.
However, the former Sevilla defender has performed beyond expectations this season after earning a place in the team following some good performances in pre-season.
Moreno’s good form was even rewarded with a first Spain call-up since May 2014 earlier this month and he insists leaving Liverpool was never an option over the summer.
“My idea was to stay, to work and to win [back] my place,” he told Marca. “I saw myself as capable. I spoke to [Jurgen] Klopp, he told me that he could not promise me anything, to work, and that they were going to sign a No.3 [left-back].
“There I thought that something was wrong. I spoke to my people and they told me to work, to start from scratch and then we’ll see. And here we are.”
After only made 11 Premier League appearances last season, Moreno has already started nine times this term, but he has reserved his best performances for the Champions League.
In fact, no player has registered more assists in the Champions League this season than Moreno (3).
