Hamburg chase Gremio defensive midfielder

 

Hamburg are on track to bolster their midfield options with the arrival of Walace from Brazilian side Gremio, reports Bild, via Get German Football.

 

Walace caught the eye of the Bundesliga strugglers during the 2016 Olympics with winners Brazil and has been identified as the ideal defensive midfielder to add steel their side.

 

Hamburg sporting director Jens Todt has reportedly travelled to Brazil to discuss a transfer with Gremio and convince Walace to make the huge jump from South America to Europe to help them in their bid to beat the drop.

 

The German side will reportedly have to pay as much as €15m (£13m) to land the 21-year-old midfielder, who has entered the final 18 months of his existing deal with Renato Gaucho’s side.

Walace made 24 appearances for Gremio in the league last season and finished with an acceptable WhoScored rating of 6.85. He averaged 2.4 tackles and 1.7 interceptions per game, while ill-discipline proved a problem after receiving eight yellow cards.

 

Furthermore, only defensive midfield partner Maicon averaged more passes per game (74.1) for Gremio in the league than Walace (60.2).
