Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed Luke Shaw is on the brink of landing a new long-term contract.
The Red Devils triggered an option in Shaw’s current contract to extend his stay at Old Trafford until the end of next season but the left-back appears to have completely won over Mourinho.
Shaw has endured a nightmare spell since joining United in 2014 and has found it particularly tough going under Mourinho.
The 22-year-old appeared destined to leave United at the end of the season but Mourinho revealed in his Friday press conference that the England international is destined to be the club’s left-back for years to come.
“Luke is not about changing my mind, it’s just the evolution or no evolution of his potential. It’s just about that," The Daily Mirror quote Mourinho as saying.
“I know Shaw since he arrived in the Premier League with Southampton and know his potential and quality.
“Could he come in my direction, the way I like my players to be, not just on the pitch but during the training week, and make a big effort?
“He’s been free of minor injuries for a few months, which sometimes stops the evolution, and I’m really happy.
“The natural consequence of it is that he will have his contract and he will be a United player for years.”
Shaw has started seven of United’s last nine matches in all competitions and Mourinho’s side have not conceded in their last 593 minutes of action when he has been on the pitch.
United have been linked with moves for the likes of Danny Rose and Alex Sandro throughout the season but Mourinho’s latest comments appear to suggest he is no longer in the market for a new left-back.
