Manchester United are preparing a £40m bid for Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier, reports the Sun.
Dier was linked with a transfer to Old Trafford earlier in the season, though a January switch was ruled out with United boss Jose Mourinho opting against sanctioning a move for the England international.
However, United look set to return for the 23-year-old at the end of the season, with Mourinho handed a hefty transfer war chest with which to strengthen his squad.
Mourinho is a long-term admirer of Dier and believes he is the man capable of replacing the ageing Michael Carrick in the middle of the park.
While a defender by trade, Dier impressed in midfield alongside Mousa Dembele for Spurs last season, though has since been moved back to centre-back in a three-man defence under Mauricio Pochettino.
It’s thought the arrival of Dier would kick off a summer spending spree for United, who are still interested in Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann, despite the Frenchman’s concerns over a move to England.
