Birmingham City still backing Zola

Birmingham City insist Gianfranco Zola’s position as manager is not under immediate threat despite their disastrous form under the Italian’s charge, reports The Daily Mirror.

The Blues’ new owners made the shock decision to sack Gary Rowett and replace him with Zola before Christmas but the gamble has backfired massively.

Birmingham have only won one of Zola’s 14 games in charge and have seen their chances of making the play-offs slip away following their 4-1 defeat at home to Queens Park Rangers at the weekend.

However, the board are not thinking about sacking the former Chelsea midfielder, although there is a feeling that Zola will step down if they lose against Wolves in midweek.

Birmingham were only one point adrift of the top six when they made the decision to sack Rowett, however they have only taken six points from a possible 36 since and are now a staggering 18 points off the play-off spots.
