Manchester United offer Arsenal target a new contract

Manchester United have offered Juan Mata a new 12-month contract extension, reports The Daily Mirror.

Mata’s current £140,000-a-week deal is due to expire at the end of the season and has already been linked with a summer move to Arsenal and Barcelona.

The 30-year-old is free to discuss a pre-contract agreement with foreign sides but United are keen to prevent the Spaniard leaving the club for nothing.

Mata has spent the last five years at United are joining from rivals Chelsea in a then-club record £37.1m deal.

The Spain international has never really nailed down a regular starting berth at Old Trafford and a reunion with Arsenal manager Unai Emery may appeal.

Mata has only started nine league matches this season and featured in half of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s eight games in charge of the Red Devils.

Since August 2016, United have a significantly better win ratio in the Premier League when Mata has started (64.7%) compared to when he hasn’t featured from the off (47.9%).
