Bayern president offers Kovac backing and pledges to spend in "grand style"

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has given his backing to head coach Niko Kovac after a poor start to the Bundesliga campaign, adding that he will receive significant backing in the transfer market, AS reports.

Speaking at Bayern’s AGM Hoeness stated that the club were ready to invest in new players “in rather grand style” next season having been more frugal in recent windows.

He cited the potential retirement of a number of the clubs elder statesmen in the squad as a reason to invest heavily in the future, claiming that “The club will then have the room as well as the necessary capital to reinforce the team, so that we will be more than a match for every opponent in the Bundesliga and most international opponents. That must be the ambition."

Bayern sit fifth in the Bundesliga after 12 matches despite winning their opening four matches of the campaign. Over the next eight gameweeks the German champions picked up just nine points, which is only enough to rank 12th in that period.

Despite their struggles the club’s outspoken president gave new coach Kovac his backing, adding "We have a very, very good young coach who deserves a chance, and we should all give him our support.

“I was well informed, there has been a close alliance between the team and the coach and there have been many discussions."

Bayern have already ensured their progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League but must now bridge a concerning gap to rivals Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga.
