Sadio Mane has put pen to paper on a new five-year Liverpool deal running until the summer of 2023, the club announced on Thursday night.
Mane’s previous deal was not due to expire until 2021 but Liverpool have rewarded the 26-year-old with new terms that reflect his growing importance.
Jurgen Klopp’s side started talks over a fresh long-term deal in the summer and have finally made a decisive breakthrough in discussions after a slight delay.
Mane was handed the No.10 shirt over the summer and is now one of the top earners at the club on wages reportedly in excess of £150,000-a-week.
“I am very happy, very happy to extend my time at Liverpool,” Mane told the club’s official website. “It is a great day for me and now I am looking forward to everything - to helping the team, to helping the club achieve our dreams and, especially, to win trophies.
“I’ve always said, when I knew I had a chance to come here I didn’t have to think twice. The right club in the right moment and with the right coach as well. I came here and was very happy. For me, I have made the best decision in my career.”
Mane was briefly linked with a surprise move to Real Madrid at the start of the summer but those rumours quickly ended after Zinedine Zidane resigned as head coach of the Spanish giants.
Liverpool have now successfully handed long-term deals to Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah in the space of seven months.
Mane enjoyed a superb campaign for Liverpool last term and was key to their run to the Champions League final.
In fact, the former Southampton forward scored as many goals in 11 Champions League appearances as he managed in 29 Premier League appearances last term (10).
Mane has arguably been Liverpool’s best attacker this season, netting six goals in 11 league matches.
Furthermore, only Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (6) has won more WhoScored Man of the Match awards than Mane (4) in the Premier League this season.
