City to spalsh the cash for centre-back pair

Manchester City will spend up to £100m on centre-back duo John Stones and Aymeric Laporte this summer, reports the Independent.

Pep Guardiola is keen to revamp City's entire defence when he takes charge at the end of the season, with the centre of defence the area he has identified as the position that needs heavy investment.

The Spaniard prefers ball playing defenders in his sides and has earmarked Stones and Laporte as the ideal foundation with which to build his side upon.

Everton rejected a number of offers for Stones from Chelsea last year, but could be powerless to resist the temptation to cash in on the youngster, with City rumoured to be readying a £50m bid for Stones.

Laporte, meanwhile, is a long-term target for Guardiola and the manager remains keen on the French centre-back, despite his recent injury problems.

Athletic Club are keen on holding onto Laporte, but if City match the release clause in his contract, the Basque side will be unable to stop the 21-year-old from departing San Mames.
