Kevin Trapp has hinted at a January exit from Paris Saint-Germain as he eyes a spot in Germany’s World Cup squad next summer.
The 27-year-old is now the second choice goalkeeper at PSG and a lack of game time could really hurt his chances of making Joachim Low’s squad for next summer’s World Cup.
Fitness permitting, Manuel Neuer and Marc-Andre Ter Stegen will occupy two spots in Low’s World Cup squad, leaving Trapp to battle with Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Bernd Leno for the final position.
Trapp has actually played in more minutes of action for Germany than PSG this season after starting in their 2-2 draw with France on Tuesday and he has conceded that he needs to play regularly in order to make Low’s squad.
However, he has only featured in 90 minutes of action for PSG this season and has conceded he will have to consider his future if things do not improve before January.
“I am happy to have been able to play,” Trapp told reporters after Germany’s draw with France, via Canal. “I wanted to repay the coach [Joachim Low] for his confidence in me. Playing me was not the obvious option.
“I will do everything to go to the World Cup. However, it is complicated for me right now. I am working each day to be ready.
“As far as the World Cup is concerned, I absolutely have to be playing. I do not know if I will play for PSG in the domestic cups, we have not spoken about that yet. If I am not going to play, I will need to think.
“I really need to play because the national team coach insisted that I need to be performing with my club.
“I need to ask myself questions, reflect and speak with the club. However, for now I am at PSG and not Dortmund or anywhere else. My head is with PSG, I have a five-year contract and I am going to give everything.”
Of goalkeepers that have featured in at least 15 Ligue 1 games since the start of last season, Trapp has the best save success rate (77%).
