Mesut Ozil agrees terms to unprecedented Arsenal deal

Mesut Ozil has agreed terms to a new three-and-a-half-year deal with Arsenal that will make him the best paid player in the club’s history, according to BBC Sport.

The Germany international was widely expected to leave Arsenal at the end of the season when his current contract expires but Arsene Wenger’s side have successfully managed to convince him to stay.

Ozil was heavily linked with a January move to Manchester United to reunite with Jose Mourinho but the Red Devils instead signed his former team-mate, Alexis Sanchez.

Arsenal have shown greater ambition in this window than in previous years combined after breaking their club transfer record for the second time this season by signing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund.

The Gunners also managed to prise Henrikh Mkhitaryan away from United in a straight swap deal for Sanchez and Ozil has now put pen to paper on a stunning £350,000-a-week deal that will take him through to his 32nd birthday.

Only Kevin De Bruyne (73) has created more goalscoring opportunities than Ozil (66) in Europe’s top five leagues this season.
