Gundogan reveals he turned down Liverpool and Barcelona for Manchester City
Ilkay Gundogan has revealed he turned down ‘father figure’ and Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, and Barcelona, to move to Manchester City in 2016.
The Germany international departed Borussia Dortmund for City almost two years ago, though his time at the club has been blighted with injury.
However, Gundogan is getting back to his best form and with Fernandinho sidelined for the foreseeable future, is expected to gain ample playing time between now and the end of the season.
And the 27-year-old has now admitted that the turned down Liverpool and Barcelona to link up with Pep Guardiola, who he described as the best manager in the world, at the Etihad Stadium.
"I was very close to joining Barcelona, but in the end it didn't work out,” Gundogan is quoted as saying by Sport Arena Plus via the Sun.
"I am where I want to be and I am very happy.
"Klopp wanted me, but I decided to go with Guardiola, because his philosophy is closer to my style of play.
"Klopp is like a father to me. Guardiola is a genius, a master. He is the best manager in the world."
Gundogan is expected to start on Sunday when Manchester City host Chelsea.
