Star defender a Euro doubt for Germany

Bayern Munich defender Mats Hummels has cast doubts over his participation at the European Championships next month after revealing it would be a ‘long time’ before he returns to full fitness.

Hummels, 27, is expected to be one of Jogi Low’s first choice central defenders to partner Jerome Boateng at the heart of their defence at the Euros but he is a doubt heading into the tournament after suffering a torn calf muscle in the German Cup final 10 days ago.

The Bayern defender hasn’t even managed to train with Germany squad in the build up to the tournament missed their 3-1 defeat to Slovakia on Sunday and admits he won’t be fit in time for their first group game against Ukraine on June 11.

“It’s going to take a while until I can kick a ball again,” Hummels told Sky Sports.

“First of all, I need to be 100 per cent fit. We’ll have to see which game I can aim for. Perhaps it won’t be ready, or maybe even for the second. You probably won’t see me train with the team in Ascona at all.”

Hummels, who will re-join Bayern from Dortmund this summer, finished his last two league campaigns with BVB as their second highest rated player (7.46 rating) and his absence to the Germany squad would be a real blow to their chances of following up World Cup success in France next month.
