Manchester United poised to complete £40m signing today

Manchester United are expected to announce the arrival of Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic in a deal worth £40m on Monday, reports The Guardian.

Matic has been angling for a move away from Chelsea since the end of last season and is now on the verge of reuniting with Jose Mourinho after undergoing his medical with the Red Devils on Sunday.

The Serbia international’s relationship with the United manager was tested during Mourinho’s final year at Chelsea but he remains a trusted lieutenant for the 54-year-old.

United were expected to wrap up a deal for Matic much earlier in the summer but any potential deal looked off the cards when Mourinho’s side hi-jacked Chelsea’s transfer of Romelu Lukaku.

However, United have managed to resurrect a deal for Matic, who will turn 29 on Tuesday, as Mourinho closes in on his third signing of the summer following the arrival of Lukaku and Swedish defender Victor Lindelof.

Mourinho had hoped to sign Tottenham ace Eric Dier this summer but has been forced to settle for a reunion with Matic after it proved too difficult to prize the England international away from Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Chelsea’s decision to sign Monaco midfielder Tiemoue Bakayoko earlier this month all but confirmed Matic’s future was away from the Premier League champions and the Serbian has even been training separately from the main group in order to secure his exit.

In the last two Premier League campaigns, Chelsea have a significantly better win ratio with Matic out of the starting XI (66.7%) compared to when he has been included from the off (51.7%).
