Manchester United face fight to secure De Gea’s future
Manchester United are struggling to convince David De Gea to pledge his long-term future to the club, claims The Daily Telegraph.
De Gea’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the season but United will activate their right to a further 12 months.
The Spain international has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent years after emerging as the best goalkeeper in the world.
De Gea turns 28 at the end of the year and is concerned about signing off his best remaining years to United.
The former Atletico Madrid goalkeeper is happy at Old Trafford but wants to fight for the trophies in the league and in Europe.
United have endured a nightmare start to the season and there has been a lot of talk about Jose Mourinho’s future as manager.
Thibaut Courtois’ move from Chelsea to Madrid in the summer provided United with a huge boost but they still have a lot of work to do to secure De Gea’s future.
De Gea was heavily criticised for his performances at the 2018 World Cup and hasn’t rediscovered his best form for United this season.
The 27-year-old has only kept one clean sheet in eight league games and has conceded 14 games in that time.
In fact, only Fulham (21), Huddersfield and Cardiff (17) have conceded more Premier League goals than United this season.
