Belgian happy at Chelsea amid Madrid talk

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has denied he held talks with Real Madrid in the summer and insists he is still happy at the club.

Courtois, 24, was heavily linked with a return to the Spanish capital in the summer and has previously revealed he will wait until the final year of his contract to make a decision, which is due to expire in 2019.

Madrid reportedly came calling after giving up on the idea of signing Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea but the Chelsea No.1 has refuted those suggestions.

“I never had anything with Real Madrid. I did not see anything published, but I never had any contact with Real Madrid,” Courtois told Spanish radio station Cadena Cope, via Sky Sports.

“I am happy at Chelsea. Everything is going well – it is a great club. There is no reason not to be happy at Chelsea. You never know what will happen in the future, but at the moment I am very well, in a very good atmosphere.”

Courtois spent three seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid before returning to Chelsea to establish himself as their undisputed No.1 in 2015, but categorically denied the chance of a return to Diego Simeone’s side in the summer.

“There was never any talk about a possible return to Atletico,” he continued. “Oblak is doing very well and I am happy about that. These are rumours that come out from people who do not know anything.”

The Belgium international endured a difficult maiden campaign as Chelsea’s No.1 goalkeeper last season but is enjoying his finest spell in a Chelsea shirt at the moment. Chelsea have won each of their last five matches and haven’t conceded a goal in that period.

Unsurprisingly, Courtois has kept at least two more clean sheets than any other player in the Premier League this season (6).
