Koke wants new Atletico deal

Koke has confirmed he wants to sign a new deal with Atletico Madrid extending his stay with the La Liga giants.

The Spain international has previously been linked with a move away from Atletico but has signalled his intentions to remain with Diego Simeone’s side.

Koke, 24, still has three years remaining on his existing deal but wants to follow in the footsteps of some of his Atletico teammates and sign a contract extension.

“In theory, yes,” Koke told Goal.com if he’d like to further his contract. I have a contract. It runs until 2019 and so I will fulfil that until 2019. And if the club wants to, we will talk and it will be renewed.

"[Simeone] is fundamental to the club. Ever since he arrived, he has changed the mentality of everyone. He has always had a positive attitude on a day-to-day basis and that is key for us. We work match by match and I believe that is what has made us get to where we are today.”

The transformation of Koke has also been impressive this season. Simeone has previously used Koke as a wide midfielder in his 4-4-2 formation, but has brought the Spaniard into the heart of the pitch this season.

Koke is now becoming the heart of Atletico’s play. In fact, he is averaging far more passes per game in the league this season (76.6) than he ever has (57.8 previous best). Indeed, only Javier Mascherano (77.8) averages more passes per game in La Liga this season.
